Every extra second of load time costs you visitors — and search rankings, since page speed is a direct Google ranking factor. The good news: most slow websites are slow for a handful of predictable reasons, and most of them are fixable without a rebuild.
The Usual Suspects
- Unoptimized images. The single most common cause of slow pages — full-resolution photos served at display size instead of compressed and properly sized.
- Too many render-blocking scripts. Every third-party script (chat widgets, tracking pixels, ad tags) adds load time, and they add up fast.
- No caching or CDN. Every visitor re-downloading the same assets from a single server location is slower than serving cached assets from edge locations near them.
- Bloated themes and page builders. Drag-and-drop page builders often ship far more CSS and JavaScript than a given page actually uses.
- Unoptimized database queries, especially on content-heavy or e-commerce sites with large catalogs.
What Actually Moves the Needle
- Compress and resize images before upload, and serve modern formats like WebP where supported.
- Lazy-load below-the-fold images so the browser doesn't fetch what the visitor hasn't scrolled to yet.
- Audit third-party scripts and remove anything that isn't earning its keep.
- Enable browser and server-side caching, and put static assets behind a CDN.
- Minify and bundle CSS/JavaScript to reduce the number and size of requests.
Measuring What Matters: Core Web Vitals
Google measures speed through three specific metrics: how fast the largest visible element loads (LCP), how quickly the page responds to input, and how much the layout shifts while loading (CLS). Chasing a single "page speed score" without understanding these underlying metrics often leads to fixing the wrong thing.
A site that scores 100 on a synthetic test but frustrates real users on a mid-range phone hasn't actually solved the problem.
Where to Start
Run your site through a free tool like PageSpeed Insights, note the three or four lowest-scoring opportunities, and fix those before anything else — they're usually responsible for the majority of the slowdown. See our SEO & Performance service if you'd rather have this handled for you.
